La bohème-Giacomo Puccini- Programme – Season 2014/15

The Greek National Opera presented in December 2014 in Olympia theatre one of its oldest productions: a work loved by the audience all over the world, Puccini’s popular La Bohème, in the version of the celebrated Italian director, Lina Wertmüller. Images evoking nostalgic postcards flooded with colour, and sets and costumes inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec's Paris have been revived at the Olympia Theatre stage. The plot is about the love of a poet, Rodolfo, for a seamstress, Mimi, against the backdrop of a freezing Paris in Christmas, from the moment they first meet until the death of the girl from tuberculosis.

The new production directed by Michail Marmarinos and Akillas Karazisis Kolokotronis Contemplating the Future Women Preparing for the Revolution and I’ll Be Thinking of Something was presented to GNO Alternative Stage on 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 October 2021. The production, part of the 2021 bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, was commissioned by the GNO Alternative Stage and involved a high-profile artistic team led by directors / performers Michail Marmarinos and Akillas Karazisis as well as noted composer Antonis Anissegos. Via the means of a theatrical language where stage and sonic elements are intertwined in unpredictable and novel ways, the new production by Michail Marmarinos and Akillas Karazisis sets out to approach the Greek War of Independence as a field of constant critique and self-critique, thus putting forth a dramatic treatment at once playful, poetic and historically informed.

A Greek Songbook – Programme – Season 2020/21

The Alternative Stage of the Greek National Opera presented the new ambitious production A Greek Songbook, a Greek collection of songs for the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Over 30 creators from the fields of art music and popular music and the performing arts created bold compositions, songs and images. A Greek Songbook was presented in three concerts on the GNO Alternative Stage at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on 19, 20 and 21 November 2021. A Greek Songbook’s creative team consists of: Yannis Angelakas, K.Bhta, Savina Yannatou, Foivos Delivorias, Sofia Zafeiriou / Georgia Karydi, Fanis Zachopoulos, Nalyssa Green, Dimitris Kamarotos / Amalia Moutoussi, Pavlos Katsivelis / MC Yinka, Apostolos Kitsos, Petros Klampanis, Lolek, James Wiley / Giannis Dionysiou, Dimitri Papageorgiou, Michalis Paraskakis, Vasilis Magouliotis, Pavlos Pavlidis, Giorgos Poulios, Euripides Laskaridis, Blaine L. The Greek National Opera kicked off its autumn programme on Sunday, October 3, 2021 at the Stavros Niarchos Hall at the SNFCC with the first presentation of Paul Carrer’s opera Frossini – in concert – as part of the tribute to the 2021 bicentennial of the Greek Revolution 1821. Directed by Elias Voudouris and performed by the distinguished soloists of the GNO Vassiliki Karayanni, Dionysis Sourbis, Yannis Christopoulos, Tassos Apostolou, Julia Souglakou, Haris Andrianos. With the participation of the Orchestra and the Chorus of the GNO.

Sleeepingg Beauty- Pontus Lidberg / Patrick Kinmonth / Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Programme – Season 2017/18

The dance version of Charles Perrault’s famous tale set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was first staged in 1890 and since then has remained exceptionally popular worldwide. The Greek National Opera, which has previously presented classic choreographies of the work, presented in November 2017 an impressive new version from two acclaimed artists for its first artistic period at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center: the well-known Swedish choreographer, film maker and dancer Pontus Lidberg who has worked with the New York City Ballet, the Monte Carlo Ballet and the Dresden Opera as well as other major organizations, and the acclaimed British set and costume designer, Patrick Kinmonth, recognized as a multi-faceted persona in the world of the visual arts, opera, fashion, photography, with an extensive range of artistic accomplishments to his name, from British Vogue’s creative director to set and stage designs for operas and ballets for some of the world’s leading opera houses. Lidberg/Kinmonth’s version of Sleeping Beauty follows the tale as we move through the four seasons of the year, symbolizing birth, love, life, and death. This particularly impressive production with its brightly-colored sets, which dance in tandem with the dancers from the Greek National Opera’s Corps de Ballet, takes an utterly modern approach to choreography while engaging in dialogue with the style of classical ballet.

Dance With My Own Shadow – Manos Hadjidakis -Programme – Season 2020/21

The Greek National Opera Ballet presented at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on 27 and 29 July 2021 for two unique performances of the exceptionally successful production Dance With My Own Shadow with music by Manos Hadjidakis and choreography by Konstantinos Rigos. In Dance With My Own Shadow –a production that premiered in the GNO Stavros Niarchos Hall at the SNFCC in November 2019–, GNO Ballet Director Konstantinos Rigos choreographed four unique works by the great Manos Hadjidakis for the Greek National Opera Ballet. In the C.N.S. Cycle, the rough sea forms the setting for loss and pain, in Captain Michalis the humid southerly wind blowing at night “falls upon women like a man, and upon men like a woman”, in the Accursed Serpent Karagiozis’ figure stands out as a symbol of the timeless folk art, and in Gioconda’s Smile New York becomes the luxurious and noisy setting for loneliness and despair of modern life.
